About Renshi Howell
Renshi Howell began training in Karatedo Doshinkan in 1983 at the age
of 12 under the direction of Sensei Joe Howell (his father). For 6 years
Bret trained regularly in the Spokane dojo and made as many trips as possible
to train with Hanshi 10 Dan Isao Ichikawa. This was sometimes several
times a year.
Later while attending WSU for a degree in Mechanical Engineering it was
possible for Bret to train with Renshi Pat Karr in the Moscow Idaho Dojo.
In 1994 Renshi Karr moved to Laclede Idaho and Bret began leading the
Moscow Dojo. In 1996, after finishing at WSU, Bret moved back to Spokane
and began leading the Spokane Dojo.
The title of Renshi was awarded to Bret in September of 2000, and the
rank of 5th degree black-belt (5 Dan) was achieved while in "Special
Summer Training" in Tittling Germany, August of 2004. Both of these
promotions came directly from Hanshi 10 Dan N. Ichikawa.
Renshi Howell currently works as a Mechanical Engineer in Spokane. He
is extremely dedicated to his training in Karatedo Doshinkan and is
almost always at scheduled trainings in the dojo. The Spokane Dojo continues
to grow and prosper and Renshi Howell is very involved with the development
of his students.
Renshi Howell will tell you that Karatedo Doshinkan has had the single
greatest impact of anything in his life. He endeavors to help others learn,
develop, and enjoy Karatedo Doshinkan with the hope that they may benefit
from training as he has.
